Potential Difficulties:
This is a small table to show a few of the potential difficulties i will face when doing each of my tasks. I have added a column alongside it, which shows how i will deal with each of these problems.
Proposal Forms:
Film Trailer:
Below are more advanced proposal forms for the first of my three tasks via prezi presentation. I will post the ancillary task proposal forms in the following blog posts. These are still just my initial, first ideas, therefore i may decide to do things slightly differently when i do my filming, however this is what my thoughts are for now:
Magazine Cover:
Describe your idea for the brief:
A movie magazine called “Spotlight” with a busy front cover; covered with the main image slightly covering the masthead (in order to show that it is well established) with lots of subheadings down the left hand side. These subheadings will have relevant photos next to them, each representing different movies and interviews which will also be inside the magazine.
|
Genre/ sub genre: list similar magazines which have inspired your thoughts
Empire Magazine – this has inspired me because I really like the simpleness od the typography for the masthead at is very bold, yet plain. This shows it does not need to be fancy or have any intricate detail in order for it to be successful or well recognised, which is something i want to reflect in my work. It is one of the most successful movie magazines in the UK, and since my local cinema is the Empire Cinema, i see the Empire magazine almost every shop i go to, which is something i want to happen with my magazine cover; i want it to be easily recognised and widely distributed in order for my movie to get a lot of recognition and media publicity.
|
Target audience: gender/ age
While the target audience gender for my actual trailer is female, i think the gender audience for my magazine would be both male and female. This is because both genders read and enjoy movie magazines, as both genders enjoy watching films at the cinema. This means that the buyers/subscribers of my magazine will not lean toward any particular gender. As for age, i feel as though it will be mainly adults and teenagers buying my magazine, as they are typically the age of people who visit the cinema to watch movies.
|
Major conventions I will use
The title/masthead of the magazine will be in upper case letters (similar to Empire) and it will be titled 'SPOTLIGHT'. The front cover will be rather busy with a lot of cover lines covering information on what’s inside the magazine (photos will accompany these sublines). The colour scheme will be very light, with whites, greys and reds dominating the entirety of the front cover. This is a very gender neutral colour scheme, which is something i want to achieve.
|
Conventions I may subvert/ change/ not use
I will not make the magazine too over-crowded because otherwise, it will look like its aimed for an audience younger than what I am going for. I may add a few other colours to my colour scheme if I need to, so that it doesn’t look too bare with too many white blank spaces.
|
Original images: what/ where/ what
On the front cover, a photo of the 'creature' that follows the girl in my trailer will be featured. This will either be a mask or some face paint art that i will need to create in time. I want it to be a high quality photo, therefore shooting it in a professional studio would be most suitable, preferably with 3 point lighting. It will most likely be myself who is wearing the mask or face paint.

My chosen Sub-Genre:
I have chosen the sub genre is both psychological and slasher horror. I have made this decision because my story revolves around a girl who is being stalked by a serial killer (this relates to the slasher genre) and it starts to play with both the viewer's her emotions greatly, and plays with the mind (psychological horror). I will obviously not be including a lot of blood and gore and body hacking in my trailer, therefore it is a very tame 'slasher', however i can imply that the film will contain gore, without actually showing it in the trailer.
Researching Horror Sub-Genres:
Action horror is a sub-genre that combines evil with gun fights and frantic chases that are performed in the general genre 'Action'. Examples include, Dawn of the Dead, from Dusk till Dawn and Blade. Action horror films can also include the fantasy horror genre, for example resident evil, Ghost rider and planet terror.
-------------------------------------
Body Horror:
-------------------------------------
Comedy Horror:
Comedy horror combines elements of comedy and horror. The horror genre almost always inevitably crosses over with black comedy. The film “The legend of the sleepy hollow” is said to be the first and greatest comedy-horror genre. Examples include. Scary movie, slither, Shaun of the Dead and gremlins.
-------------------------------------
Gothic Horror:
-------------------------------------
Psychological Horror:
-------------------------------------
Often deals with the paranormal. This genre can also deal with the fear and the advancement of technology to create monsters and fear towards the characters. Examples include Alien and The Mist.
-------------------------------------
Slasher Horror:
This sub genre deals with a lot of violence which usually revolves around a serial killer stalking and killing a numerous amount of victims. The killer usually uses a specific weapon of choice to kill his victim. Slasher films are also built up on a lot of mystery and suspense and will usually overlap with crime. Examples include, Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Prom Night
---------------------------------------
Zombie Horror:
Zombie films revolve around viral re-living mindless corpses who seek the flesh of the living. Examples include: Night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, and I Am Legend.

Chosen Film Name:
Out of all my decisions, i have thought about it and i would like to call it 'shadows'. This is because i was thinking about each of my products (my film trailer, the poster and magazine) and i was trying to work out which would be best on all of them. I chose shadows because i invasion the film poster to feature my main character standing alone with trees towering over her in the woods, with white/yellow glowing eyes lurking in all the shadows.

Initial Planning - Genre and Name:
Choosing a Genre:
I need to think of a genre which i want all my products to be based on. I have listed below a list of genres which i could possibly use, and have stated the possibilities of each one.
Comedy
Comedy is one of my favorite genres of film, however i think it would be very difficult to film a horror trailer. This is because everyone has a different sense of humour, and creating a product which has to be funny to my audience would be perhaps a little too difficult, as not everyone has my sense of humour.
Horror
I think a horror film would be the most suitable to film when considering my limitations (unexperienced student). What i mean by this is that a lot of horrors are low budget, with hand held cameras, which would be very perfect for my trailer because i do not have the suitable equipment to create a perfect, clean cut trailer. However there is pressure to make it as scary as possible, as if it doesn't scare my viewers, it would not do very well in the film market.
Thriller
Like a horror, i think a thriller would be very fun to film. However, i'd need to create a lot of tension and suspense, which may be difficult to do for 2-3 minutes. I'd also need a highly exciting story line in order to attract my target audience.
Action
I think an action film would be difficult to film, because an action film usually includes physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic chases. These would be all very dangerous to film, and it would be difficult to find actors and actresses who would have a physical fight for me.
Romance
Romance would be a fun film trailer to film in my opinion, as they are all very cliche, making it very easy to come up with a plot. However, i do not have a boyfriend myself, therefore i'd have to get one of my friends and their boyfriends to act for me, or i'd have to have two of my friends act as though they're in a relationship. Both of these ideas may be slightly awkward to film, and i don't think my friends/actors would be willing to do it.
After analyzing all my options, i think my best bet would be a horror film. It will be very convenient to film, as i can use hand held cameras to make it seem realistic, and it will be fun to create a scary antagonist/storyline.

Thinking of a Name:
I have chose to use horror as my chosen main genre for my film, therefore i need a suitable name for it in order to feature it in my trailer, poster and magazine. Below are some of my ideas.
- Paranoia
- No Escape
- Dead End
- Shadows
- No Way Out
All of these are relevant to my basic idea of a story featuring a girl who wanders into a forest and can not escape due to the creatures lurking in the shadows everywhere she looks. After i have thought more about my basic plot, i will choose out of this list which i think would be best for my film trailer.

Reconstruction Task:
Below is my completed reconstruction task, which i have edited on premiere pro and uploaded to Blogger. It is a reconstruction of the first 30 seconds of the twilight trailer video which has been uploaded previously on my blog.
There are clearly a lot of faults with this video, as after losing our first reconstruction there was a lot of pressure to re-do it all in a short amount of time, however overall i don't think it is too bad. When making my main film trailer, i will learn from the mistakes made in this trailer and will hopefully produce something which looks a lot more professional.
Time Management Update #1:
My deadline for the re-construction task was the 27th June. I managed to write the storyboards, do filming and edit the entire film trailer, however due to technical difficulties with the college's Macs, the film trailer was accidentally deleted, therefore i will have to re-do it all. Because of this, my new deadline is September 26th.
Storyboards for reconstruction task:
These are my storyboards which i will follow when doing my reconstruction task. By using a storyboard to follow, it allows me to plan out all the shots used, along with camera movements, locations, number of people needed etc. We plan to film the majority of this scene in the College car park, and the people i will be using as actors will be my friends; Bethany and Samantha.
This is a scene from an existing trailer; the first 30 seconds of this twilight trailer below.
