Researching Film Companies - Big 6 (USA):

The Big 6

the 'big 6' are conglomerates which own several other smaller companies. These six are the largest conglomerates of their kind, and they make up the majority of popular film production.  They are:
  • Disney
  •  Time Warner
  • Sony
  • Newscorp
  • Viacom
  • GE
Disney: The Walt Disney Company controls around 14% of the North American market. The Walt Disney Company also owns other large film companies and divisions, such as Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Time Warner: Time Warner is a conglomerate that owns the second biggest share of the markets in USA and Canada combined at over 15% percent. It is also the owner of other brands and divisions. Examples are New Line Cinema, Castle Rock Entertainment, Turner Entertainment Co., Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment.

Sony: Sony is the conglomerate behind Sony Pictures Entertainment. It shares 17% of the entire US and Canadian markets, and is therefore considered as the biggest studio these days. It also owns companies and prominent film brands like Tri Star Pictures, Columbia, Sony Pictures Animation, Destination Films, Triumph Films, Stage 6 Films and Affirm Films.

NewsCorp: News Corporation is the owner of the Fox Entertainment Group. Other companies under News Corporation include Fox Faith, 20th Century Fox Animation, Blue Sky Studios and Fox Animation Studios. It also has a minority stake in New Regency Productions. The company owns a 10.6% share of the US and Canadian markets.

Viacom: Viacom is the conglomerate behind the Paramount Motion Pictures Group.  It also has a company dedicated for B movies called Insurge Pictures. It has an 8.5% share of the entire North American market. It also owns MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies.

GE: Comcast/General Electric owns NBCUniversal and is the company behind Universal Pictures.  It has a 13.6% share of the US and Canadian markets. Other companies under it are Illumination Entertainment, Working Title Films and Universal Animation Studios.

I felt it was necessary to research these companies because i am going to need a film company which will be the owner of my film that i'm creating, therefore i will need to include it into the trailer. If i want to make my trailer seem like its bound for success i will need to use one of the bigger companies in order to portray that it will be of a good quality.
